Starting the Signs of the Times

May 1874 - July 1874

After he proposed the idea of a journal in California in an article in the Review, and at the General Conference session in November 1873, James White printed the first issue of the Signs of the Times in June 4, 1874. It was soon evident that the journal would need a publishing house at its command. In prayer God showed James and Ellen White that she must go east to the churches and solicit money. Since James could not leave the journal unattended, he was not able to accompany his wife. On her journey Ellen attended the camp meetings of Seventh-day Adventists in the east, set fourth their situation in California, and money was raised at every meeting.
