Dear E. G. White Estate Staff, Just a couple weeks ago I visited the E. G. White Estate and was give= n the tour. The tour guide mentioned the presence of early documents from the Jehovah's Witness sect that contain information that some in that religion would prefer not be known. I was wondering if you also had anything similar on the Mormon religion. After seeing the plethora of [mis-] information out there regarding the "cultish" roots of Adventism, I can't help but be skeptical of what these same Christian writers might say regarding Mormonism. I would like to find something more substantial in other words Sincerely, ___________
Dear Brother ___________,
Thank you for contacting the Ellen G. White Estate. I don't know whether you visited the Silver Spring office or the one here at Andrews. I know that the Adventist Heritage Center, with which we share some facilities here, has rare books from the Jehovah's Witnesses. In fact, one of them was the target of an attempted theft just a couple of weeks ago. Though I do not know the literature on these other groups well at all, I feel confident that the library here would have some helpful material on Mormonism. I would like to think that the one or two books on Mormonism that Seventh-day Adventists have written and our presses have published might be in the better category of things. But the truth is that I don't know enough about them (either the books or the Mormons) to know if this is correct.
I was interested to read your comment about the quality of some books on "cults." I have had the same reaction when I have read, say, Walter Martin's book on Seventh-day Adventists. His case might be quite convincing to someone who doesn't know our teachings and history intimately, but I often felt that he was mischaracterizing things. This has made me suspicious about how accurately and fairly the other groups he wrote about were being treated.
This isn't much to go on--sorry! Thank you for writing, and God bless!
