My daughter is seriously involved with a man of another race. She is white, he is black. My family has pointed her to Ellen White's counsel against this, but she says at that time it was applicable, because it was written during the civil war. She points to the counsel on bicycles as an example.
How does one tell if counsel applies to all time, or just the time in which it was written?

Dear Sister ___________,
Thank you for contacting the Ellen G. White Estate. I can certainly appreciate your concerns as well as your question. I have some materials here in our files that might be of interest to you, but I don't have them in electronic form. I could send them to you through the mail if you would give me your mailing address. One of them is a letter written some time ago by Elder Paul Gordon, who later became the Director of the Ellen G. White Estate, to a young woman in a relationship similar to the one your daughter has formed. I thought the letter was well done. Another item I could send is several pages from T. Housel Jemison's textbook on the Spirit of Prophecy, "A Prophet Among You." This addresses the question of how and when to apply counsel given long ago. I have a few thoughts of my own that I could include as well. If you want me to mail you the other items, I will include them with those materials, since I will refer to the other materials at times.
I will await word from you. Again, thank you for getting in touch. I will be praying for you and your family. God bless.
