During this period of uncertainty and bitter disappointment - after Jesus did not come in October 1844 - Ellen's health, already impaired, worsened rapidly. While in this condition Ellen responded to an invitation from a close friend, Mrs. Elizabeth Haines, to visit her in south Portland. At one morning family worship three other young women joined Mrs. Haines and Ellen. While she was praying at the family altar, Ellen received her first vision. It was about the disappointment of the advent people, their travelling to the city and Jesus' second coming.
