By the summer of 1864 the civil war had become so intense that the General Conference Committee made an appeal for a day of fasting and prayer. Two months later, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day for humility and pleading with God for peace.

In January 1865 the president issued another call for volunteers to fill up the ranks in the armies.
